Thomas Paine was not a metaphysician by title. He was a pamphleteer, a revolutionary, and one of the most plainspoken philosophical voices of the 18th century. But his 1794 work The Age of Reason placed him squarely in the tradition of metaphysical inquiry — challenging the doctrinal foundations of organized religion not from hostility to spirituality, but from a conviction that reason and the study of nature were themselves sacred acts. He believed that the universe itself — its order, its scale, its incomprehensible complexity — was more compelling evidence of the divine than any text written by human hands. That is a deeply metaphysical position, and Paine held it at enormous personal cost.

I dedicated ESA's School of Metaphysics to Thomas Paine because metaphysics, at its core, is the discipline of refusing inherited answers. It is the study of what is real, what exists, and what it means for something to be — and those questions cannot be answered by deferring to authority. They require exactly the kind of independent, courageous reasoning that Paine embodied and paid for with his reputation. Paine was dismissed, marginalized, and largely abandoned by the same revolutionary generation he helped inspire — because he kept asking questions they had decided were settled. ESA's School of Metaphysics exists for everyone who has ever been told that the question they are asking has already been answered. It has not. Paine knew that. So do we.
